Blue Sodalite

Blue Sodalite is typically found in varied shades of blue, from the lightest blue seen in Denim Sodalite to medium and dark blue, royal blue, and a deep blue-violet to black. It is most often recognized by its bright White Calcite veins. A rare form of Sodalite, Hackmanite (found in Afghanistan), is a translucent crystal found in grey to violet. The color of Hackmanite varies with the sunlight. This unusual phenomenon is called tenebrescence - when a mineral changes color when exposed to sunlight - just like eyeglasses that darken in sunlight and lighten indoors. A versatile and interesting stone that was discovered in 1806 in Greenland, Sodalite became more popular as an ornamental stone in 1891, when large deposits were found in Ontario, Canada. It was on a visit to Ontario when Princess Patricia of England chose Sodalite as the interior decoration for Marlborough House—and 130 tons of this beautiful stone were quarried and shipped to England.
