About Gemstone Color
Gemstone color is determined by color markings of natural minerals in the sunlight. Many minerals, quartz for example, occur naturally in a variety of colors - and most individual semiprecious gemstones are multicolored, showing a rich variety of colorations. Some minerals are white or colorless. Even fewer (like black onyx) are solid in color. Unless specifically described as "solid," the natural semiprecious gemstones used by Miriam are multi-colored or show variations and shadings of a single color. That’s why she uses the term Colortone to describe her jewelry. Natural gemstones each have a unique combination of pattern, texture, transparency and color - even when they belong to the same rock or mineral family - and even when cut from the same larger stone. A single stone source, for example, may result in a strand of stones, or collection of cabachons, that include combinations of minerals with different colors, tones and textures. Because natural stones are not of sterile gem quality, individual stones frequently may show the rough and scarred appearance that results from the adverse climatic conditions under which it was created by Mother Nature. This is a beautiful feature of natural stone. Exquisite colors, crystalline structures, luster and the play of light, natural inclusions (crystals, mica, or fragments of other substances), streaks and markings...All reflect the continuous evolution of the Earth over hundreds and thousands of years. Some natural stones are heat-treated to enhance clarity. A gemstone that is enhanced is still considered a "natural gemstone." |
For each Colortone Gallery below, we have set up sections that may include a variety of gemstones that have more than one dominant color. In some cases, a particular gemstone or necklace may appear in more than one color group or section because of its various colors.
