Picture Jasper is formed from mud that dripped into gas pockets in molten lava. The resulting pattern of extraordinary banding or veining resembles a picture or landscape, hence its name. While brown picture jasper might be the most common, Picture Jasper also forms naturally in remarkable colors and color combinations due to a high iron content and the level of the earth’s natural minerals and impurities that may be present in the stones. The colors are often dependent on where the stones have formed. For example, Miriam’s Private Gemstone Collection includes Australian Picture Jasper, found as striking multicolor stones of red, teal, green and brown, and Owyhee Oregon Picture Jasper with softer shades of teal, brown and terracotta. Picture Jasper truly is a Stone of the Earth—and each stone is remarkable. On the other hand, Brioche Jasper probably got its nickname because it resembles a mix of deep dark chocolate brown, caramel tan, and creamy white. Magnesite is sometimes referred to as White Turquoise because of its bold brown matrix and its typical cut—which is like a bumpy-lumpy nugget. The unique and natural stones selected by Miriam are cut as rondelles and have a smooth polished finish. The soft cream color has a stunning matrix of dark-to-milk chocolate and reddish brown. Magnesite is not Turquoise at all, but composed of magnesium carbonate. According to sources, for hundreds of years, many Native Americans, including the Pomo people of California, crafted Magnesite into beads that were used as jewelry as well as currency.
