Green Garnets

Green Garnets may be among the most valuable of garnets, which come in a variety of colors. In addition to the Green Garnets from Miriam’s Private Collection, Garnet varieties come in Red, Orange, Brown, Black, Blue, and Purple. Some Garnets are called Uvarovites, and change color from night to day. Garnets have been used for adornment and spirituality by myriad cultures and civilizations throughout history, their oldest known use being in Egypt more than five thousand years ago. Metaphysical essence: Prosperity, creativity, vitality, benevolence, and optimism.

Described here are several varieties of Green Garnets:
  • Tsavorite Garnets are a stunning intense medium and brilliant green - and very rare, with fewer inclusions than Emeralds. Color can range from lighter yellowish-green to dark green. Tsavorite Garnets were first found in the 1960s on the border of Kenya and Tanzania. The main source today is Tsavo region of Kenya, as well as Tanzania, Pakistan Italy, South African, Russia, Mexico, Canada, and the USA.
  • Demantoid Green Garnets are known for their diamond-like luster and brilliance – and are the most valuable of all the Garnet varieties. They are part of the Andradite family of garnets and range from a yellowish-green to emerald green. The intense greens are more valuable, but the lighter green stones display a more diamond-like fire. Dermantoid Garnets are distinguishable by their horsehair-like inclusions First discovered in 1853 in the Russian Urals, additional sources were found in Namibia’s Green Dragon Mine (1996) and Madagascar (2003). Other areas are known in Afghanistan Italy, Iran, China, Korea, Zaire, and the USA.
  • Color-Change Green Garnets or Uvarovites, are also rare - and valuable. These gemstones change color because they have two distinct light transmissions instead of one. For example, usually a red gem appears red because it absorbs all frequencies of light except red. In contrast, a color-change gem will absorb all frequencies except blue and red. So when the light is in the blue wavelength (such as in daylight), the Uvarovite Green Garnet will appear blue or green. When the light source is rich in the red wavelength (incandescent light) the stone will appear red. Brown-Green Uvarovite Garnets will change to bronze in daylight, and pink-red in incandescent light. Sri Lankan Uvarovite Garnets change from blue-grayish-green in daylight to reddish-purple in incandescent light. Sources of these unusual Garnets are East Africa (Umba Valley, Tanzania), Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Norway, and the USA .
