Dragon Blood Jasper (Bloodstone) Necklace is Elegant (GRN-003) Sold
There is a legend that Dragon Blood Jasper (Bloodstone)is the remains of deceased ancient dragons, probably because even the most polished stones have a rough and craggy surface like the legendary dragon’s skin—the range of forest greens being the skin, and the deep red matrix of iron oxide being the dragon’s blood. The stone is mined in South Africa, China, and Australia. Another variety of this craggy lizard skin-like stone is called Septarian Dragon Stonewhich is white and brown, sometimes in shades of olive green. While the names of these natural stones are often interchanged, The Mineralogical Society of American lists them as two distinctive crystalline structures. Septarian Dragon Stoneis a form of sedimentary rock; Bloodstone (or Dragon Blood Jasper)is a form of Chalcedony. Miriam’s Bloodstones are probably from South Africa. Like most natural stones, no two are alike—just as Miriam’s designs are one-of-a-kind creations that epitomize the fashion expression Wearable Art. Miriam’s Designer Jewelry is always about the stones—how they look and feel to the touch, and what sort of accent stones and potential wire-wrap designs they may inspire. That's one of the reasons she describes her jewelry as "Stones by Mother Nature. Jewelry by Miriam Bat-Rachel.”
- Full length of the necklace is approximately 21.25 inches, including the textured bronze clasp.
- The oval stones are approximately 34x22 mm.
- The squared stones, which have rounded edges are 21mm in diameter
- The larger “Dragon Skin” textured and beaded accents are handwrought bronze and 7x9mm.
- The “Peppercorn” textured round beads are handwrought bronze and 6mm.
- The beautifully textured clasp is handwrought Old World Bronze ™.
- The necklace is strung on a strong but flexible 0.019, 49-strand stainless steel wire coated with Antique Bronze-colored nylon.
Miriam used two types of bronze in this necklace:
- The clasp is Old World Bronze (TM), which is handwought using an old-world wax method, and an exclusive bronze recipe developed by the Charveaux family of metalsmiths in Scottsdale, Arizona.
- The “Peppercorn” and larger accent beads are also handmade by Anna Chernykh of ANNA Bronze. The texture of these particular beads reminded Miriam of “Dragon Skin.” Anna lives and works in in Kungur, a small town in the Ural Mountains of Russia. She also uses an old world wax method, using the Russian technical standard of bronze known as BrOF 10-1. It contains only copper and tin, no cadmium, no lead, and no nickel.
