Miriam used Natural Red Aventurine and gold metalized beads (gold metal over plastic) to accent the Genuine Hand-Carved Ox Horn and large round Acrylic focal beads. The Acrylic has a bright-to-deep red glow—just like the mystical Red Mountains in Sedona during sunrise and sunset. The beads and gemstones are matched on all one-of-a-kind gemstone sets. Single gemstone Letter Openers and Magnifying Glasses are also available on this website and by Custom Order.
Interesting Facts and a Geological Lesson About Natural Soapstone: A naturally multicolored rock, Soapstone has been a medium for carved products for thousands of years. Native Americans on the West Coast traveled in canoes from the mainland to San Clemente Island (60 miles offshore) to obtain soapstone for cooking bowls and effigy carving as early as 8000 years ago. Also known as Steatite or Soaprock, Soapstone is a type of metamorphic rock, largely composed of the mineral talc, which is rich in magnesium. It is produced by a geological process called dynamothermal metamorphism and metasomatism, big words simply mean the replacement of one rock by another of different mineralogical and chemical composition. The minerals that compose the rocks literally are dissolved, and new mineral formations are deposited in their place. This occurs in zones where tectonic plates are subducted--another fancy term that means the rocks are changed by heat and pressure, with the influx of fluids, but without melting.
- Gold-Plated Letter Opener measures approximately 7 inches from tip-to-tip
- Gold-Plated Magnifying Glass measures approximately 5.5 inches from tip-to-tip.
