The soft butterscotch yellow of this Calcite Donut Pendant and Chunky Necklace set is smooth to the touch and looks good all year round. The Pendant is wire-wrapped in Sterling Silver with Miriam's Signature Swirl. The stones are transparent to translucent and have a lustrous pearly look in the sunlight.
The Nature of Calcite. Calcite is a carbonate mineral ranging from white to naturally occurring shades of gray, red, orange, yellow, green, blue violet, brown, and sometimes black. It may be transparent and crystalline, translucent or opaque. While abundant in such a variety of natural colors, in its purest form, Calcite crystals are completely colorless and transparent. It's finish has a vitreous (glassy) to pearly or soft luster. It is primarily classified as a 'collector's stone'--but not because of its rarity. Instead, Calcite is often referred to as a collector's stone because it lacks the hardness of many gemstones and is quite soft and fragile compared to other gem types. That said, it is a very pretty and abundant stone that is a common constituent of sedimentary rock, such as limestone, which often contains organic materials including the shell remains of marine organisms. In fact, the composition of Calcite is similar to various organic gemstones such as pearls and coral.
Caring for Calcite. Calcite gemstones require great care and gentleness when it comes to cleaning. Like most carbonates, it can be easily scratched and is sensitive to acid. Avoid harsh cleaning agents, including bleach and acid, and do not use ultrasonic cleaners or steamers when caring for your Calcite. Use only a soft cloth and a mild soap, if needed. Store in a soft jewelry pouch, or wrapped in a soft cloth.
- Necklace length is 18 inches.
- The Calcite pendant stone is 40mm (approximately 1.5 inches) in diameter.
- Chunky necklace stones are approximately 14-15mm.
- The nugget-shaped accent stones, wire-wrap, and clasp are Sterling Silver.
