Miriam could not resist this unusual free-form Magnesite heart. She used it as the focal stone for this distinctive Chunky necklace. Each nugget is separated by a round Sterling Silver bead. The two large sculpted nuggets and two small sculpted accent beads are Electroformed* Sterling Silver. The necklace may look heavy, but is lightweight and comfortably drapes around the neck.
  • Length including the clasp is 19 inches.
  • Creamy White Magnesite Heart is approximately 22x34mm.
  • Creamy White nodular nuggets are approximately 13x16mm
  • Sterling silver round beads are 3mm.
  • The Sterling Silver Clasp is textured.
Why did Miriam decide the stones in this necklace are Magnesite, not Howlite? It’s almost impossible to determine the chemical difference with the naked eye. Howlite is a calcium borosilicate formed by the combination of boric acid and silicon dioxide with calcium in gypsum sediments. Magnesite is a soft magnesium carbonate mineral. While their colors are similar, Howlite has a milky white marble or porcelain look with a matrix of light gray, or light to heavy black or dark brown spider web veins. Magnesite tends to be more of a creamy white or beige with a light brown to dark black or brown intricate spider web matrix. Both stone types also may appear in cauliflower-like clumps. Miriam thought the stones for this necklace were more of a creamy white, and the webbing more of a dark to lighter brown than black.

*Electroformed Sterling Silver Beads are created through an intricate process that begins with a bead made of wax. The wax bead is immersed in a solution that electrically forms pure silver over it. The next step is to burn out the wax, leaving the hollow, sterling silver formation. The sterling silver is then highly polished or antiqued (as in this necklace)to produce the lighter-weight Sterling Silver bead. This process is perfect to produce Sterling Silver beads that are highly sculpted or that have unusual shapes.
