This exquisite Fossil Coral and Sterling Silver Pendant shows a lovely range of colors naturally exhibited in this decorative stone. The photos show both sides of this outstanding reversible pendant.
Fossil Coral is an astonishing creation of nature that displays ornate and textured flower or fern-like patterns, but should not be mistaken for the protected and endangered coral reefs from today's modern oceans. Natural Fossil Coral contains fossilized remnants of ancient coral reefs, with no artificial enhancements. The striking patterns are determined by the particular species of coral that became fossilized. This lovely stone is formed when the original ancient coral is gradually replaced with a solution of one or more minerals, such as silica, iron or manganese. The solution hardens into agate (a crystalline quartz), which is why the proper name of the stone is "Agatized Coral" or "Agatized Fossil Coral." The hardened agate maintains the contrast between the original soft tissues and the skeletal remains of the coral. Depending on the assortment of minerals, Fossil Coral can exhibit a wide range of natural colors, including white to gray, creamy beige, red and reddish brown, orange, yellow, purple and pink. Fossil Coral can be found all over the world - anywhere that an ancient ocean existed!
