About Tiger Eye:These natural stones are known for their shimmering colors—or "chatoyancy." In gemology chatoyancy (or chatoyance) is an optical reflectance effect coined from the French "chat oeil," meaning "cat's eye." Chatoyancy arises either from the fibrous structure of a material, as in Tigers Eye, or from fibrous inclusions or cavities within the stone, as in cat's eye chrysoberyl. The effect is similar to the sheen off a spool of silk, or the sun shining on a lovely lake - like a gentle, wavering reflection of color. For a gemstone to show this effect, it is carefully cut with the fibers or fibrous structures parallel to the base of the finished stone. Miriam seeks out stones that show the very finest of this shimmering feature. She photographs the finished jewelry in very bright sunlight to show the full chatoyancy (shimmer and glow) of each stone.
The Colors of Tiger Eye:
Tiger Eye (or Tigers-eye) is available in a golden brown, reddish brown, and greenish brown. Another variety, called Hawk Eye has a much darker bluish to black color. Miriam’s gorgeous Tiger Eye and Hawk Eye jewelry features stones carved into smoothly polished spheres, triangles or rondelles, all patterned with natural bands and swirls. The striking optical effect, due to fibers in the stone, makes the surface appear to shimmer as the stone is rolled from side to side. The red version is gently heat treated to bring out the iron oxide that is a natural component of the stone. The blue stones are also heat treated to bring out the blue crocidolite fibers. Heat-treated stones are considered natural, since there is no dye or other substance used to color the stones. The heat brings out the natural color. These beautiful stones are found in the United States, Canada, Korea, China, Brazil, Namibia, India, and Burma.
