Botswana Agate
Botswana Agate is considered Agate Royalty because of its unique patterns and distinct and circular banding, as well as the intense contrasts between the bands. The stones were formed nearly 187 million years ago by lava flowing in waves from long faults in the earth. The lava rolled across the landscape, depositing layer upon layer of Quartz Silicate to create the banding and patterns. Botswana Agate is extremely rare. Some of the bands are transparent, providing a fascinating view inside the structure of the stone. Botswana Agate is found in the Mashatu area, as well as along the Limpopo River riverbed, which runs near the border of Botswana and South Africa. This amazing stone is found in a variety of natural colors – all showing the beautiful fine and parallel banding in swirling patterns that only Mother Nature can create. When very dark, white, and clear agate bands form closely together, they create a shadow effect known as parallax. Gray Botswana Agate has gentle gray and soft white swirls. Some stones are gray with delicate shades of mauve and a purple-red, peach and apricot, taupe and pearly creams. Others are tan, grey-black, brown, mahogany, pink, white ,green and lilac. Red Botswana Agate shows bands of red, orange, brown, and white. Yellow Botswana Agate displays delicate bands of golden to pale yellow and cream, with a hint of orange.
