  • Amazonite and Russian Amazonite

Amazonite and Russian Amazonite

Amazonite, also known as Amazon Stone, is a member of the Feldspar family. Feldspar comprises a group of minerals containing potassium, sodium, calcium, and aluminum silicates. They are the most common rock-forming minerals. Amazonite has a long and illustrious history dating back to Mesopotamia. It was used in the Egyptian Book of the Dead, and an Amazonite ring was found among the treasures in King Tutankhamun’s tomb. The histories of Brazilian Amazonite and Russian Amazonite differ greatly and are as unique as the stones!  Brazilian Amazonite is an opaque blue-green to light green stone, often occurring with inclusions of white, yellow or gray and occasionally translucent milky white. It is named for the Amazon River in Brazil, where the stones are thought to have been originally found, however they are not currently sourced from that particular region. According to Brazilian legend, the Amazon people gave ''green stones'' to the visitors of the region. Europeans were already familiar with green microcline from Russia and assumed the blue-green rock given to them by the Indians of South America was the same stone. But not all stones names Amazonite are associated with the Amazon River. Historically, Russian Amazonite is the most sought after Amazonite and is mined in Russia in the Miass, along the Ilmen Mountains in Chelyabinsk. This darker form of the semiprecious gemstone was first discovered in Russia. Russian Amazonite beads offer a deeper, brighter green to blue-green (teal) color than typical Amazonite stones, with gray and white striations that are often more pronounced - some having a lovely sheen in the sunlight. Miriam favors the darker teal color and especially likes the way the beautiful white, textured striations add a special design element to each piece, making it even more unique. Metaphysical essence: Self-confidence, friendly behavior, effective and effortless communication, truth, and harmony.
