On this page: The intricate blue and white patterns of natural SODALITE,

the bright and deep blues of LAPIS LAZULI teamed with PERUVIAN TURQUOISE...

and two beautiful necklaces designed using DUMORTIERITE,

which ranges in color from very deep blue-violet to a lighter blue...

Another variety of SODALITE is ORANGE SODALITE (Yes, Orange!) - A striking contrast

to the beautiful shades of blue and violet also seen in this unusual natural stone.

Each stone, and each Miriam design, is a unique work of art.

SODALITE

Blue Sodalite is known as a Lapis Lazuli look-alike, but at a fraction of the cost of Lapis. Sodalite is also known for its full range of blues, from the lightest blue seen in Denim Sodalite to medium and dark blue, royal blue, and a deep blue-violet to black - with varying splashes and streaks of white calcite. Discovered in 1806 in Greenland, Sodalite became more popular as an ornamental stone in 1891, when large deposits were found in Ontario, Canada. It was on a visit to Ontario when Princess Patricia of England chose Sodalite as the interior decoration for Marlborough House - and 130 tons of this beautiful stone were quarried and shipped to England. Orange Sodalite is a variety of the traditional Blue Sodalite. Although Sodalite is found all over the world, the Orange Sodalite Miriam used for her jewelry is from Brazil.

LAPIS LAZULI

Prized for its intense color, sometimes including a hint of violet, natural LAPIS LAZULI also shows varying degrees of golden or silver pyrite streaks that shimmer like little stars when the stones are polished. While Afghanistan remains a major source of LAPIS LAZULI, important amounts are also produced from mines west of Lake Baikal in Russia, and in the Andes mountains in Chile. Smaller quantities are mined in Italy, Mongolia, the United States and Canada. This lovely stone is composed of varying amounts of Sodalite, Pyrite (which can have a gold or silver metallic sheen), and its host rock - White Calcite. Lapis typically is not treated in any way, and is often highly polished. As like some other stones, Lapis may also be "matted" - a process that starts with putting the stone through all the normal steps of a polished bead. It is cut, drilled and polished, then is put back into a tumbler with a cement-like mixture that contains a fine grit powder of tiny stones and water, and additional tiny stones. Depending on the stone's characteristics and hardness, it can take up to two hours in the tumbler - and may require multiple tumbles with various sized grit powder. Matte LAPIS LAZULI is still considered "natural" because none of the color nor composition of the stone is changed. It is just "matted" instead of "polished" to a sheen.

Lapis Lazuli Chunky Necklace with Sterling Silver Nuggets

The natural LAPIS LAZULI stones chosen by Miriam to create this "chunky" necklace have a beautiful velvet-like matte finish

that looks especially nice with large stones that are not faceted. The interesting Sterling Silver squared and carved nuggets

are the perfect accent to the Chunky Lapis! To keep the necklace from being too heavy,

Miriam used "electroformed"Sterling Silver beads which are hollow. Electroformed Sterling Silver beads are created through an intricate process

that begins with a bead made of wax. The wax bead is carved or shaped and then immersed in a solution that electrically forms pure silver over it.

The next step is to burn out the wax, leaving the hollow, Sterling Silver formation.

The bead is then highly (and sometimes given an antiqued finish). This is a perfect way to produce high quality Sterling Silver beads

that have unusual shapes, such as the carved nuggets Miriam used to higlight the chunky look of this one-of-kind necklace.

Full length of the necklace is 19.25 inches (including the textured Sterling Silver Clasp, and weight 8 ounces.

The Lapis Lazuli chunky-cut stones vary from 12-15mm to 21-23mm, and are nicely graduated.

The Sterling Silver carved nuggets are approximately 16mm square.

Accent Sterling Silver beads are 7mm, and the small Lapis round beads are 6mm.

The necklace is strung on a strong, but flexible, 0.024-inch, 49-strand, nylon covered stainless steel beading wire.

DUMORTIERITE

This beautiful stone is typically blue or violet in color, ranging from a very deep blue-violet to a lighter blue. Often confused with Lapis Lazuli, Dumortierite also looks similar to Sodalite. The differences are that natural lapis has streaks of golden pyrite (as shown in the above necklace), and sodalite (shown at the top of the page) exhibits small-to-large areas of white calcite. Some varieties of Dumortierite also show areas of brown, pink, a bluish-green, and green. Most gem-quality material is found in Nevada (USA). Other localities include France, Madagascar, Norway, Sri Lanka, Canada, Poland, Namibia and Italy.
